This program is geared towards HS juniors & seniors who want their creative critical voice to soar over the tedium of the college application process. Using spoken word and hip-hop as inspiration, we will write high-quality college application essays and explore numerous scholarship opportunities. This workshop will put you on track to get into college, and to GET MONEY.
WOMEN REBORN - DJ Reborn
Tuesdays, September 28 – December 14 4:30-6:30PM
In this workshop, critical artistic skills – turntabling, close reading, lyric analysis, collage building and creative writing– become the doorway to discovering women’s contribution to these mediums and our world. Acclaimed female DJ and poet, DJ Reborn facilitates this workshop for teen WOMEN.
Carving Out the Poem: You, Your Poems, & the 3-Dimensional World –Jon Sands Wednesdays, September 29 – December 15 4:30-6:30PM
When our life experience suggests that celebration always comes laced with a hint of melancholy, and joy is a border that surrounds sorrow; how can we construct and perform poems that acknowledge a complicated and dynamic world? We will explore tangible ways to reveal a 3-dimensional view of our poems. Bring a notebook, pen, comfortable shoes, and a sense of adventure as we take our art to the edge of the universe, and bring back proof that we’ve been there.
Word to Everything I Love - Willie Perdomo
Thursdays, September 30 – December 16 4:30-6:30PM
In this workshop, teens will explore personal voice, literary device and poetic forms in an uncensored, safe, student-centered environment. This workshop will be lead by award-winning poet Willie Perdomo, author of Where a Nickel Costs a Dime and Smoking Lovely, which won a PEN American Beyond Margins Award.
Publishing: Chapbooks & The Literary World – Mahogany Browne
Fridays, October 8 – November 19 4:30-6:30PM
Learn how to collate your best pieces for a chapbook or literary submission. Explore how “keeping it real” goes wrong on the page, and other non-slam antics for poets that considered publishing when performing wasn't enough. The Glamourbaby Diaries - by Ruby Veridiano
Saturdays, October 9 – December 4 2:00-4:00PM Glamourbaby Diaries is a writing program with a fashion twist & Asian American women's history focus that encourages young women to redefine beauty, glamour, & elegance by encompassing themes of strength & social change. Incorporating media, fashion, & women’s history, participants will analyze the Asian Pacific Islander image in society. This workshop aims to create empowering media for young women, where they can find modern & engaging examples to express their beauty, identity, & leadership. Using Hip-Hop Music and Hip-Hop Cultural History as a springboard, participants will explore their own histories and creativity through dynamic writing and performance exercises. This will be a space where young people can freely express themselves, while learning to be active and positive contributors to their community. Sacred Promises: The Ultimate Cypher - Intikana
Thursdays October 7 – December 9 6:30-8:30PM This workshop will be facilitated in the tradition of ancestral campfires and folklore. As a group, we will tell stories about who we are and why it matters. Through committing to the prospects of sacred transformation, we will embark on a vulnerable journey to promises of evolution. Finding one’s natural voice, developing original concepts, and seeking new ways to invigorate the five senses will be of primary importance as the goal of this workshop will be to create multi-disciplinary works that build purposefully beyond entertainment.
