Would you like to engage your students in the power of language and personal voice? Are you looking for innovative ways to activate group discussion, validate and champion the stories and visions of your youth? Do you want an inspiring performance from some of NYC hottest teen poets?

Urban Word NYC specializes in individually tailoring writing workshop residencies, professional development and performance events for schools and community sites across the city.

SCHOOL & COMMUNITY PARTNERS: Work closely with Urban Word NYC to develop collaborative, student-centered programs for youth. These programs are facilitated by trained writing mentors and designed to honor and develop young voices. Such partnerships may result in creative writing/spoken word workshops, poetry events, and/or on-site presentations. Writing and spoken word performance workshops are offered during school and after school hours, and may range from one session to a full academic year residency.

PRESENTATIONS and EVENT PRODUCTION: Present the talent of Urban Word NYC’s youth poets at your location to optimize the success of your events. Enhance an existing event with youth spoken word performance, or throw your own youth-focused poetry event. Urban Word NYC can help you achieve your goals. With ten years of experience running successful events bringing together diverse populations through the common ground of poetry, UW partners with organizations around the city to enhance and/or coordinate presentations, panel discussions, open mics and poetry slams.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT and CONSULTING CLIENTS: Leverage Urban Word NYC's expertise in working with youth on creative writing /spoken word, and using poetry to promote critical thinking, civic engagement and true communication regardless of age or experience. These partnerships often center around professional development, exploring such topics as: ways to use spoken word in a traditional classroom setting; team-building through poetry; teaching from your passions/revitalizing your work through art; incorporating spoken word in the literary tradition; and using a youth mentor/youth-centered model in the classroom.
