Urban Word NYC's FREE workshops are where it ALL begins: building skills in writing and performing in a setting that values a diversity of voices and experiences. Urban Word NYC's FREE and uncensored creative writing/spoken word and hip-hop workshops happen year-round, after-school, at our NEW center in the Fashion District and in community centers around the city. Workshops are open to youth ages 13-19 unless otherwise specified.

WOMEN REBORN - DJ Reborn

In this workshop, critical artistic skills – turntabling, close reading, lyric analysis, collage building and creative writing– become the doorway to discovering women's contribution to these mediums and our world. Acclaimed female DJ and poet, DJ Reborn facilitates this workshop for teen WOMEN.

MASTER CLASS - Willie Perdomo

In this workshop, teens will explore personal voice, literary device and poetic forms in an uncensored, safe, student-centered environment. This workshop will be lead by award-winning poet Willie Perdomo, author of Where a Nickel Costs a Dime and Smoking Lovely, which won the 2004 PEN American Beyond Margins Award.

WRITE LIKE WATER - Tara Betts

Thursdays September 27 - December 13 4:30-6:30pm
@ Urban Word NYC - 242 W. 27th St. (btw 7th & 8th Ave)

In this workshop, we will look at patterns in our writing, how to break those old patterns and experiment with poetic forms. Students will also create a form of their own in this workshop that others can attempt with the fluidity of their words. We will follow the ways of water and attempt to shake the containers with waves of haiku, sonnets, the decima, bantu poems, the blues and other types of poems.

WRITE THE POWER - K~Swift

Using Hip-Hop Music and Hip-Hop Cultural History as a springboard, students will explore their own histories and creativity through dynamic writing and performance exercises. This will be a space where young people can freely express themselves, while learning to be active and positive contributors to their community.
