Urban Word NYC conscientiously addresses the implications of the student/teacher relationship. Traditionally, this relationship is one that perpetuates the notion that the teacher is the arbiter of knowledge, and the student is the receptacle of that knowledge. We believe that learning is a reciprocal relationship between teacher and student. That said, we make a very deliberate choice to call our freelance writing instructors, MENTORS. Each mentor comes with specific training and experience in creating student-centered learning environments, in which building relationships with and among the participants is part of the writing experience.
