    7th Annual Urban Word NYC Regional Teen Poetry Slam

    Come support the top teen poets from across the Northeast region compete in celebration and fellowship of the word. The performing poets have won their local slams and are now preparing for the Brave New Voices National Teen Poetry Slam in San Francisco this summer. Invited cities include teams from Philadelphia, Providence, Worcester, Boston, Lowell, Newark, Washington D.C., Connecticut and your hometown favorites from Urban Word NYC. Show some love before they go take Chicago by storm..

    Preemptive Education Conference 2013

    The Preemptive Education Conference finds its roots in the Urban Word NYC’s Annual Mentor, Teacher, Educator & Community Activist Training. Now in collaboration with the Center for Multicultural Education and Programs at NYU, Steinhardt School of Culture, Education and Human Development, Hip Hop Education Center, the Institute for Urban and Minority Education and El Puente​, this meeting aims to examine critical issues that affect today’s youth, while providing creative and practical resources to address them.

    Urban Word NYC believes that free self-expression - matured in an enhanced critical literacy environment - improves self-confidence and strengthens educational achievement for NYC’s inner city youth. We promote active literacy, critical thought, and positive social dialogue across boundaries of age, race, class, gender, culture, and sexuality. Our many workshops are designed to enhance critical thinking skills, leadership, and to ignite a personal commitment to growth and learning which leads to heightened in school performance, and greater interest in pursuing higher education.
