Become a Mentor

Interested in being a Mentor/Teaching Artist with Urban Word NYC, one of the leading youth arts & literacy organizations in the country?

Please see below the list of what we need for you to apply and what you can expect as one of our mentors:

WHAT TO EXPECT

  • High Caliber Roster: Urban Word NYC has been teaching across the city for 20 years! We want you to know that you are applying to join a force of Internationally acclaimed poets and educators experienced in teaching in our classrooms while attending national poetry competitions and touring the world! We are looking forward to adding you to that roster.

  • Flexible Scheduling: As we know our mentors are touring artists, working with other organizations, or in school, we work with your schedule! Once a teaching artist, Urban Word will request that you provide your availability and update it whenever it changes so we know when to book you!

  • Biweekly Payments: We take paying our artists seriously.

  • Contract agreement: As we work with Middle Schools, High Schools, Private or Public Schools, and various partnering organizations, our integrity lives in our brand. You will be sent a contract to review and sign before sending you to any gigs so we have a mutual understanding of professionalism and presentation.

  • On-Going Professional Development: Our goal is to have every mentor continuously perfect their craft during their time with us. Through our connections with various arts & educational organizations as well as on-going support, you will have access to number opportunities to learn new skills and techniques for the classroom.

NOTE: The Urban Word NYC Mentor position is a contract position.
It is not a full-time or part-time position.
